Note: Ignore the bracketed numbers that prefix the zipped license attachments – these are associated with license issue dates and are only relevant in the analysis.

There are 19 unique OpenLDAP licenses; 17 are likely worth adding to the SPDX list (more below).

-          The first license is actually named “The Net Boolean Public License Version 1”

-          The OpenLDAP 2.0 License was officially issued with and without the word “registered” prefixing the word “trademark”.  The first version of the 2.0 license (which incorrectly included “registered”) was available for 6-months before the correction was made.  Our choices are:

1.       To avoid having either of the licenses fail text comparison, separate the license into OpenLDAP 2.0A and OpenLDAP 2.0B

2.       Log a single license, OpenLDAP 2.0, and have that match the later, corrected  version (without “registered”).  Early versions of the OpenLDAP 2.0 will fail the comparison and the full text will be required.  I recommend option 2.

-          The OpenLDAP 2.2.1 License was officially issued with and without a comma after the copyright year.  The first version of the 2.2.1 license (which did have the comma) was available for 3-months before the correction was made.  Our choices are:

1.       To avoid having either of the licenses fail text comparison, separate the license into OpenLDAP 2.2.1A and OpenLDAP 2.2.1B

2.       Log a single license, OpenLDAP 2.2.1, and have that match the corrected version (without the comma).  Early versions of the OpenLDAP 2.2.1 will fail the comparison and the full text will be required.  I recommend option 2.

-          The full list of licenses is as follows (Identifier followed by Full Name):

1.       NBPL-1  Net Boolean Public License Version 1 (issued twice, but only formatting differences)

2.       OLDAP-1.1  Open LDAP Public License Version 1.1

3.       OLDAP-1.2 Open LDAP Public License Version 1.2 (issued 4 times, but only formatting differences)

4.       OLDAP-1.3 Open LDAP Public License Version 1.3 (issued twice, but same day; only corrected version goes to SPDX list)

5.       OLDAP-1.4 Open LDAP Public License Version 1.4

6.       OLDAP-2.0 Open LDAP Public License Version 2.0 (or possibly 2.0A and 2.0B)

7.       OLDAP-2.0.1 Open LDAP Public License Version 2.0.1

8.       OLDAP-2.1 Open LDAP Public License Version 2.1

9.       OLDAP-2.2 Open LDAP Public License Version 2.2

10.   OLDAP-2.2.1 Open LDAP Public License Version 2.2.1 (or possibly 2.2.1A and 2.2.1B)

11.   OLDAP-2.2.2 Open LDAP Public License Version 2.2.2

12.   OLDAP-2.3 Open LDAP Public License Version 2.3

13.   OLDAP-2.4 Open LDAP Public License Version 2.4

14.   OLDAP-2.5 Open LDAP Public License Version 2.5

15.   OLDAP-2.6 Open LDAP Public License Version 2.6

16.   OLDAP-2.7 Open LDAP Public License Version 2.7

17.   OLDAP-2.8 Open LDAP Public License Version 2.8

The licenses are attached.

The link for the “Other web pages for this license” note in each license posting is http://www.openldap.org/devel/gitweb.cgi?p=openldap.git;a=history;f=LICENSE.  This is the official OpenLDAP license log.  It provides the date and text for every license that was issued, including reissues that were done for corrections or changes in formatting.

Topic: OpenLDAP License Versions:

This is an update to the 17Sep2012 email that I sent to SPDX Legal regarding the OpenLDAP licenses.

I received a reply back from OpenLDAP.org today and now have the definitive set of licenses.  There are 24.

However, there are several situations where OpenLDAP.org reissued a license with the same version number (and internal issue date) but with changes to the license text

I am now reviewing the changes.  Some appear to be changes in spacing, but others change wording.

In situations where there is a change in formatting, but there will be an exact match according to our guidelines, I will recommend that the license have a single identifier; in situations where there is a change in wording, I will suggest that we suffix the License ID with “A”, “B”, etc.

More when I know it.

Subject: OpenLDAP License Versions

On the last SPDX Legal call, I offered to look into the various OpenLDAP licenses.

There are 8 licenses: 2.0.1, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4, 2.5, 2.6, 2.7 and 2.8

Below are general changes introduced with each license:

-          2.0.1 to 2.1:

o   Added note that revisions may occur

o   Added OK to use software with this or subsequent versions of license

-          2.1 to 2.2:

o   Added OK to copy and distributed [sic] verbatim copies of license

o   Typo introduced: "any subsequent [version of] the license

-          2.2 to 2.3: Typo regarding license version corrected

-          2.3 to 2.4: misc changes to the acknowledgement and endorsement language

-          2.4 to 2.5:

o   Change to acknowledgement section

o   Change to warranty to include authors.

-          2.5 to 2.6: requirement to give authors due credit removed

-          2.6 to 2.7: adds that title to copyright remains with copyright holders

-          2.7 to 2.8: "Redistributions of Source Code" changed to "Redistributions in source form"

I have submitted an inquiry to openldap.org (OpenLDAP.org #2512) requesting confirmation that this is the complete set of licenses and that the text for each license is correct.
