Re: Hosting the SPDX 2.0 License Compare to Drive Traffic to SPDX Site
Hi Gary,
I wish I could offer to contribute like I formerly did, but I am now without cycles.
Is the option to host the compare utility still being discussed? I continue to think that this will be a huge driver to SPDX, including the potential for additional individuals joining the team.
Also, the first group to do this will get the benefit. Great if we can be that group.
All, Gary mentions below:
- A hosted instance of Tomcat
- Some time or volunteers to add a web front end to the SPDX tools (or, alternatively, write a different set of tools if the volunteer wanted to work in a different programming language)
Can anyone assist with the above? If we need to go to Amazon, I’ll write the first month’s check.
Tom

Hi Tom and Jilayne,
This is also high on my list of things to do along with an SPDX online validation tool. We had a Google Summer of Code project defined for the latter, but unfortunately the Linux Foundation was not included in GSoC this year. I do, however, have a student from last year, Gang Ling, who is interested in volunteering to help with such an effort.
To move this forward, we would need two things:
- A hosted instance of Tomcat
- Some time or volunteers to add a web front end to the SPDX tools (or, alternatively, write a different set of tools if the volunteer wanted to work in a different programming language)
We can approach the Linux Foundation and see if they can provide a Tomcat instance. We can also use Amazon for 20 to 30$/month. Solidifying the plaing for a Tomcat instance is probably the first step.
For the web front end, I have done some of the work already. I was thinking I could work with Gang Ling and see if we could get something working. Once we have the Tomcat instance plans in place, I can also request volunteers on the tech mailing list.
I probably won't make any progress on this myself until after this month (there has been an unusually heavy demand for code audits lately). If someone wants to ping the Linux Foundation for hardware/software support for a Tomcat instance that would help move it forward.

Tom read my mind - that would be so awesome!!!
How might we go about doing that??

Hello Gary,
Has the tools / marketing team considered hosting the license comparison tool – the benefits would be global, and would drive substantial and diverse traffic to the SPDX site.
The compare result could come with a splash screen directing individuals to an SPDX landing page, including a request for volunteers.
Thanks,
Tom

Hi Jilayne and legal team,
The 2.0 version SPDX tools already supports comparing license text against the standard licenses.
Just use the command "MatchingStandardLicenses" followed by the name of a text file. It will report if the text in the file matches one of the SPDX standard licenses.

Subject: meeting minutes and other updates
Hi all,
The meeting minutes for the last two calls have been posted:
Highlights:
- future SPDX License List releases will now follow a quarterly schedule, see April 30 meeting minutes
- Does anyone have a tool they use for comparing a license against all licenses on the SPDX License List to determine if the license is already on the list or not? This would be helpful for the Legal Team, as well as maybe making part of the SPDX Tools??
Projects for 2015:
I updated the Current Projects page here: http://wiki.spdx.org/view/Legal_Team/Current_Projects_and_Issues
- This page had not been updated since early 2014 (!!). I’m happy to say that many of the things on there have been accomplished and then some. This really got me thinking about how much we have done in the past year all told: all the work that has gone into 2.0 and related initiatives is really, really significant, so THANKS EVERYONE!!
Now that we’ve all patted ourselves on the backs, we have more than half of 2015 left to do more great things! See the updated list, think about what else we might accomplish or how you can help achieve the items already on the list.
I have also included project “owners” as we have done in the past, which may be simply based on who made the suggestion :) In any case, we will try to get back to the idea of having appointed people to “own” various initiatives.
Matching Guidelines:
- now have a version number, as of now (2.0)
We had not versioned them before. Daniel German suggested we start using version numbers, so one can know if they have changes. This seemed like a smart idea, so they will start as of 2.0 since that’s were we are at today. The version number will most likely change on its own schedule, i.e., not coordinated with the license list or spec, since the Matching Guidelines don’t change that often, but we will discuss that issue further on a future call.
Next call:
is May 14th - we will be tackling the Standard Headers issues, so please check out the summary on the Current Projects wiki page and associated links at the above link in advance, so we can hit the ground running!
Cheers,
Jilayne
